#HallofShame | 11% Women Speakers at Silicon Valley Comic Con
Silicon Valley Comic Con is the newest addition to the Comic Con family, featuring "exciting guests from across the tech and pop culture landscapes." The conference is hosted by famous tech titan Steve Wozniak, who shares his inspiration for creating the event on the homepage:
When I was growing up it was hard to be a geek. It definitely wasn’t cool back then, but I am happy that things have changed because now being a geek, or being different is cool.
And Silicon Valley Comic Con celebrates BEING A GEEK!
It's a nice sentiment, and it would be cool if Silicon Valley Comic Con's claim of inclusivity extended to women. Steve Wozniak shows how hard it is to feel like an outsider. Unfortunately, women comic book fans may continue to feel like outsiders when they see the Silicon Valley Comic Con lineup, because so far it includes only 11% women speakers.
There's still time to make a change.
Silicon Valley Comic Con organizers have the opportunity to move their event into the Hall of Fame. This is the first year for Silicon Valley Comic Con, and it does not start until March 18th, 2016. That's plenty of time to make a change. How great would it be to show their audience that they value women from the very start by presenting a Hall of Fame gender ratio of 40% or more at the first ever Silicon Valley Comic Con?
We know that Steve Wozniak and conference organizers are capable of creating a Hall of Fame lineup. Help us encourage them to prioritize adding women speakers.
