It took an off-hand remark over coffee to get Brandy Burdeniuk to run for council.

A city employee said her knowledge of green energy, public speaking and listening skills would be a great asset.

That seemed to give her permission to dream, said Burdeniuk, who filed her papers to run in Ward 11. “The power of permission is funny. … It’s not until someone else recognizes something that you have the opportunity to reflect and envision yourself in a role of leadership.”
