Unlike the few female colleagues she had, Vivian Castleberry, journalist and “agent of social change”, did not write about recipes or community events. She was too busy pushing back on her editors and proving that she, a woman, could write about more taboo subjects like cancer and marriage. In her 30 years as a writer, she raised five children, cooked family meals every night, was a mentor to other journalists, and, despite those that discouraged her due to her gender, continued to write about the issues she cared about. Castleberry died earlier this month at the age of 95 and will be long remembered for her fearless journalism.

Avenger of the Week Vivian Castleberry wouldn’t let men determine what she wrote about. #genderavenger https://www.genderavenger.com/blog/avenger-of-the-week-vivian-castleberry-dallas-journalist
