Avenger of the Week | Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

I'm sure you've read, or you will read, several op-eds and editorials about Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and what she means to so many people, and what her confirmation to the Supreme Court means for the future.

As a civic-nerd, Black woman and mom, Justice Jackson’s confirmation process felt like many things. It felt exhilarating, and it felt so heavy. It felt like a teachable moment. It felt familiar. It also felt like a beginning. I am so thankful to witness this moment.

As we take time to celebrate this momentous event, we must also remain vigilant about gender representation. It took five women and 110 men to get to this moment. So what can we do with this joy? How do we reverberate that into ongoing action? We must remember.

We must remember that historically, women, especially women of color, were and still are, kept from places of power in business and politics. We must not forget that nothing is random or luck regarding who gets to participate and how they get to engage. And we must remember that each of us plays a part in how this narrative plays out. When we vote with our words, ballots, and dollars, we contribute to policies and attitudes that are either pro or anti-woman. There’s a long way to reach parity on the Supreme Court, but Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation is one leap in the right direction.
