As states navigate their “new normals” and pursue re-opening plans across the U.S., we’re also starting to see the return of summer music festivals; but, even though we’re excited to attend live performances again, it’s clear that the gender balance of performers hasn’t improved too much over the past year.

Lollapalooza, which is slated to take place July 29th through August 1st, has selected 16 headliners for its return to Chicago. These headliners include 44 performers, 95% of whom are men. Only two women were designated headliners, meaning women comprise just 5% of Lollapalooza’s “big-print” performers.

We’re happy to see Megan Thee Stallion and Miley Cyrus in the lineup, but Lollapalooza must do better when it comes to including women on its headlining stages. If anything looks like stifling women’s voices in public spaces, it’s a headlining lineup that leaves barely a sliver of space for women performers.

📣🚨 @Lollapalooza starts July 29th, and 95% of their headliners are MEN! 😱 This is NOT music to our ears. Let #Lolla know they must lead the way when it comes to gender balance on headlining stages. #GenderAvenger https://www.genderavenger.com/blog/action-alert-lollapalooza-headliners-gender-balance-is-abysmal
