#HallofShame | Apple Allots Women Only 7% of Speaking Time at September 7th Apple Event
While Apple sent iPhone enthusiasts a curveball with the announcement of the divisive new iPhone 7 design, their September 7th Keynote highlighted something much more common and frustrating: another tech platform with too few women. The Keynote, one of the company’s biggest events of the year, included three women, but a recent article by Mic looked into how exactly these women participated in the event and found that “at the past two September keynotes, a woman has never introduced a new product. Without fail, they demonstrate devices or features men have already announced.” A further breakdown of speaking time found that men at the September 2016 event spoke for 99 minutes while women’s voices only accounted for 8 minutes of airtime. That’s only 7%.
This is what we mean when we talk about women participants and women moderators not being adequate substitutes for women speakers. It’s easy to say "well, there were women in the audience" or "we had women onstage", but what is it all for if women’s actual voices continue to go unheard? Apple had women onstage, but men still dominated 93% of the conversation. Do you see the problem here?
